Artwork: Black Dragon

Black Dragon

This is the first time I incorporated coffee and tea in my artwork. Since I'm not a coffee drinker, the small coffee grinds in the kitchen were finally of use. Also, I found that Darjeeling tea had a darker color over Lipton.

After a few washes, diluted sumi ink was splattered by tapping on the paintbrush. The dragon was then applied with several pens on the very forgiving clayboard. Overall, the creative process was very fun and satisfying.

Flight of the Cranes

Flight of the Cranes is a mixed media illustration inspired by the classic Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints of Hokusai and Hiroshige. This artwork is also my artistic response to the those affected and lost in the recent earthquake/tsunami in Japan.

The fine art print is available on my Etsy store, under the new Charity section, with 50% of sales donated to the Red Cross.

Chinese New Year: Burning Spirit Papers

In the Chinese Taoist tradition, spirit papers (designs symbolizing good will, wealth and material objects) are burned for the ancestors and gods to be used in the spirit world and afterlife. This practice is similar to the tradition of the Ancient Egyptians, who buried objects (and other living souls) with the deceased to travel with them to the afterlife. Burning spirit papers is done primarily around the Lunar New Year, as a homage to the past.
