Andrew Zuckerman is an amazing photographer, but I especially enjoy his wildlife series. His new book Bird has such fantastic images, I initially thought they were 3D renderings as the action, lighting, and clarity of the images were so intense.

Inspiration: Rwanda Path to Peace Basket Collection

As Christmas is coming, why not shop for good? The Rwanda Path to Peace Collection is available at Macy's and several other small community centers.
After the 1994 genocide, Rwandan women found themselves with the task of rebuilding their lives and their country, as nearly 1 million of their countrymen were killed. The baskets offer nearly 4,000 female artisans the chance to attain a sustainable income through the project. The baskets run from $25 to $80. In its fifth year, the project is still growing. I happened to be in the passenger's seat of a moving car when I spotted this wonderful creature from the car. I urged my brother to stop as the sight just made my day. It was so exciting to see this amazing creature (Falcon/Hawk? outside of a National Geographic magazine) with his meal so close, on the ground, and feeding! It seemed to have gobbled up the head of his victim, which I assume was a female pigeon or seagull. After a few moments, the bird tried hopping about--meal in-tow--creating a great spectacle.

Artwork: Journey of Charon

Journey of Charon is a mixed media piece (graphite with digital coloring), based on Greek mythology's Ferryman of Hades. Charon travels in a canoe, giving his riders an intimate, uncomfortable experience into the underworld. The faceless figures add to the mystery of the piece.

Here are some photos of my visit to the Angel Island Immigration Station near San Francisco. Despite the notion that it was the "Ellis Island of the West", Angel Island was about "exclusion", mainly for the many Chinese immigrants. The poetry carved into the walls were visual lamentations of some detained.

Artwork and Halloween: Nightmare Catchers

This illustration is a mixed media piece--pen and digital coloring. I was inspired by "dream catchers", alchemy, mysticism, and alters for ancestor worship (mainly from the De Young Museum exhibit on tribal art). The eyeballs are inherently creepy, staring at you no matter how you look at them. The bones and skull elements were from various animal and human sources, mainly a bird's wings, neck, turtle shell, and frog's feet.
Hopefully, this Nightmare Catcher could snatch some nightmares for you on the wickedness day of all--Halloween! Have a great day!

Artwork: Landmines

This illustration is for the 7th edition of Propaganda Revista magazine, based in Bogota, Columbia, focusing on landmines. This is my second involvement with the publication and I'm very proud to be part of their meaningful, socially-relevant projects.
The simple black, red and white color scheme were inspired by the old political and propaganda posters of the 40s-60s. The pattern in the background is an ink drawing of abstract faces, while the skeletal fetus was an extracted image from another artwork of mine--reappropriated, but I think it will serve a better purpose in this piece. The drawing was created in pen/ink, then scanned and digitally colored. The paint splatters suggest the violence and brutality of the explosions, while the fetus represent the loss of innocence and humanity.

I was blessed with the opportunity to be the photographer for the SF Department of Public Health ad campaign on HIV vaccinations. The photoshoot had seven models, two softboxes, laughter, and plenty of food. The formal photos will launch around December for a year-long campaign. Will definitely post those photos later. =0)

Skittles was one of the first brands who compressed their site into a widget format. It aggregated content from multiple sites: Flickr (photos), Youtube (videos), Friends (Facebook group) and others. It clearly shows the power of Web 2.0--increasing social interaction in an open-format manner.
Most recently, Zombieland (the new release of Sony Pictures) incorporated this new format for several items. I wonder what will be the next innovation. . .

It's been about a decade since I've done henna body art professionally. It was a great learning experience--to explore and develop different artistic styles.
Recently, I was asked to participate in a henna project for the Aquanuts Synchronized Swim Team. After a long night of decorative work for others, I was able to create this piece on myself in an hour, freehand, reviving my carpal tunnel. Good times!

News: Disney Buys Marvel and its 5,000 Characters

Disney purchases Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion. From a marketing perspective, this is a very interesting buy, as this will enable Disney to gain a wider (male) audience. Disney has a strong appeal to young girls (princesses and magic castles) through its depth of global licensing and technology. With the acquisition of Marvel, they could market to a older demo--Marvel has a "coolness" that Disney does not. "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Nightmare Before Christmas" were successful for Disney in reaching different audiences, but Marvel will be key to retaining the young audience through adulthood via the numerous well-loved superhero characters and depth of story-telling. For Marvel, the licensing and distribution of characters and products will be easier through different venues. I'm sure we'll soon see the X-men or Spiderman as a theme park ride.

The Chosen One is a mixed media piece (graphite and digital) based on the multiple myths and stories of "the one" who's born to save or cause destruction to the world. I've always thought of pregnancy/creation of life as a mysterious, almost supernatural affair.
